Photographs by Andy Crawford chosen for five June 2014 magazine covers
I’ve been fortunate to spend most of my life working in the consumptive outdoors world writing articles about and taking photos of hunting and fishing sports of all kinds. And as my photography skills increased, my work began appearing on magazine covers.
Cover photo credits include national publications like BASS Times (sister publication to Bassmaster magazine), and all of the Sportsman family of publications: Louisiana Sportsman, Mississippi Sportsman, North Carolina Sportsman and South Carolina Sportsman.
But for the upcoming June 2014 issues of Louisiana and Mississippi Sportsman magazines, I made my first clean sweep — my images are set to appear on all four covers of that months magazines. In addition, one of my images will be on the coastal version of South Carolina Sportsman’s June 2014 issue.
One of the images (the bass cover for Louisiana Sportsman) was taken about six or seven years ago while working as a senior writer for BASS Times, but all the rest are images captured in the past six month.
My favorite image is photo of Bassmaster Elite Series pro Greg Hackney holding a speckled trout, which was actually taken somewhat as a joke. During a recent fishing trip to Dularge, La., I turned around and Greg was looking down a fish like he was aiming a gun; I thought it was hysterical, snapped up my camera and captured the image with a Tokina 12-24mm set at 12mm. While I didn’t give it much thought after that (other than it being a funny photo), the fact is that it turned out to be a perfect composition to be chosen for magazine covers.
And to top it all off, a picture of my daughter was chosen as the inset for the coastal Louisiana Sportsman cover.
Even after years of having my images published by magazines across the country, seeing one of my images make a cover never gets old. And having five magazine covers in a single month simply heightens the excitement.
