Marsh Madness 2017 was photo fest

Annual media event in Venice, La., is redfish photography fest

Venice Louisiana redfish fishing photography

Plano’s Chris Russell landed this 30-pound redfish in a shallow pond near Port Eads at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The marshes surrounding the Mississippi River’s mouth are packed with redfish, so I take advantage of any opportunities to spend time down there with my camera. And over the weekend, 80 members of the outdoor industry met in Venice, La., for an annual media event called “Marsh Madness” and over three days we thrashed the reds.

Oh, and we did some work, too.

Top Brass Tackle, Wiley X, Skeeter Boats, Rat-L-Trap, Stanley, Mustang, Mustad hooks, Seaguar, St. Croix fishing rods, Z-Man Lures, Plano, Realtree and the National Wildlife Federation sponsor the annual fishing fest, inviting outdoor writers and photographers from across the country. It’s a golden opportunity to network, learn about these companies’ latest offerings, gather story material and photos, and make lasting friendships.

My days on the water were spent with Bassmaster editors James Hall and Dave Precht, Plano’s Chris Russell, Rat-L-Trap’s Wes Higgins, Z-Man’s Shane Clevenger and FLW pro Brian Latimer. Despite winds that blew upwards of 20 mph, we absolutely destroyed the redfish.

So there were plenty of opportunities to stock my redfish photo gallery with new images. This slideshow includes my favorite images, and illustrates the beauty of Venice and its amazing fishery.
