Bull redfish run tests anglers, offers bull red photo ops

The coastal waters surrounding the mouth of the Mighty Mississippi are renowned for amazing fishing, so it was no surprise a ton of redfish were caught when a group of outdoor industry manufacturers and writers gathered in Buras, La., in mid-August. The name of the game on this trip was catching bull reds — and getting a lot of redfish photos for stories and other projects.

Writers, photographers and videographers from all over the country met at Cajun Fishing Adventures‘ lodge for the annual event, which is sponsored by a group of manufacturers including Skeeter Boats, Power-Pole, Huk, LiveTarget, Z-Man and 13 Fishing. The three-day event is filled with fishing opportunities and serve as field testing for the various products.

My attendance was cut short by prior commitments and a huge storm that rolled through the second day, but I spent a day on the east side of the Mississippi River with Joanne OBryant and Steve Crowell of Skeeter Boats. And we absolutely pounded on huge redfish, which were ganged up in the open bays on the east side of the river to spawn.

All we had to do was dangle Z-Man Swimmin’ Trout Tricks beneath popping corks, give the corks a couple of jerks and hold on. If you’ve never caught a bull red, these submarine-shaped fish really test your arms and your gear. The 13 Fishing rods and reels withstood the pounding until we headed back to the lodge with sore muscles.

This trip offered the opportunity to write a full fishing report for LouisianaSportsman.com, and network with some of the nation’s leading outdoor companies. I also was able to stock some awesome redfish photos for future use with stories, social media and other projects.

And we also were introduced to some of the newest gear in the industry. I can’t wait to test out lures like LiveTarget’s new Fleeing Shrimp and Hollow Body Craw. And Z-Man’s EZ Keeperz weighted weedless hooks and Weedless Eye Jig Heads are going to be added to my standard tackle for wrestling bass and redfish out of submerged vegetation.
