St. Mary’s Basilica history

St. Mary’s Basilica in downtown Natchez, Miss., is a beautiful example of 19th-century architecture. Construction on the Catholic church began in 1842, and it was the cathedral for the newly established Diocese of Natchez.

St. Mary’s Basilica was dedicated on Dec. 25, 1843, and was consecrated in 1846. It remained the diocese’s cathedral until 1977, and in 1998 was designated a minor basilica.

The architectural style is neo-Gothic, and features a bell tower that overlooks the city.
